I’ve been playing with prickly pears all month. First we had fun with the green variety when we celebrated National Tequila Day, and now we are chopping and muddling red prickly pears and pairing them with plump raspberries and aromatic mint sprigs for our weekend sangria.
Be careful when handling. Peeling prickly pears have small thorns and it takes practice, skill, high tolerance for pain and thick rubber gloves to be able to hold them and have full control when peeling the skins off. Those tiny thorns are barely visible to the eye and are bothersome, but believe me, they are worth the pain.
High in fiber, antioxidants and carotenoids, prickly pears can be roasted, grilled or broiled. In this case, I turned them into a vibrant syrup to sweeten and flavor my sangria. By adding raspberries and mint sprigs, the flavors combined into a perfect refresher to celebrate what is left of summer.
Prickly pear season is at its peak and they may be found at your local supermarket or if you’re lucky, in a front yard near you. But if you have a hard time finding them, you can order them online from Melissa’s Produce and they will be at your doorstep in just a couple of days.
So have friends over, juice your favorite fruit or peel some prickly pears together and share that prickly pain that will soon be soothed by this tasty sangria made with raspberries, riesling and fizzy club soda.
Ingredients
- 1 pound red prickly pears, peeled
- 1/3 cup water
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 pints raspberries
- 1 cup club soda
- 1 orange, juiced
- 1 750 milliliters bottle of riesling
- mint sprigs for garnish
- ice
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, place prickly pears, water and sugar and heat over medium low heat. Using a muddler or masher, press prickly pears until the fruit becomes soft and breaks down into smaller pieces. When mixture begins to boil remove from heat, set aside and let cool completely.
- In a large pitcher, combine, raspberries, club soda, orange juice and riesling. stir to combine and add prickly pear mixture. If you prefer to omit its seeds, pour mixture through a strainer.
- Stir to combine, serve over ice and garnish with mint sprigs.

He estado jugando con tunas todo el mes. Primero nos divertimos con tunas verdes cuando celebramos el Día Nacional del Tequila, y ahora estamos rebanando tunas rojas y combinándolas con frambuesas y ramitas de menta aromáticas para nuestra sangría de fin de semana.
Ten cuidado al pelar las tunas porque tienen pequeñas espinas y se necesita práctica, alta tolerancia al dolor y guantes gruesos para poder sostenerlas y tener un control total al pelar. Esas diminutas espinas apenas son visibles para el ojo y son muy molestas, pero créeme, vale la pena el dolor.
Con alto contenido de fibra, antioxidantes y carotenoides, las tunas se puede asar, o preparar a la parrilla. En este caso, yo las convertí en un jarabe vibrante para endulzar y agregar sabor a mi sangría. Al añadir las frambuesas y las ramitas de menta, los sabores hacen una combinación perfecta para celebrar lo que queda del verano.
Temporada de tunas está en su apogeo y que se pueden encontrar en tu supermercado local o si tienes suerte, en un patio cerca de ti. Pero si es difícil encontrarlas, se pueden ordenar en línea de Melissa’s Produce y estarán en la puerta de tu casa en sólo un par de días.
Así que invita a tus amigos, mezcla tu jugo de frutas favorito, ponlos a pelar algunas tunas y comparte ese dolor punzante de las espinas que pronto se calmara con esta sabrosa sangría hecha con frambuesas, riesling y agua mineral.
Sangria de Tunas y Frambuesas con Menta
rinde 8 personas
Ingredientes
1 libra de tunas rojas, peladas
1/3 taza de agua
1/4 taza de azúcar
2 pintas de frambuesas
1 taza de agua mineral
1 naranja, su jugo
1 botella de 750 mililitros de riesling
ramitas de menta para decorar
hielo
Instrucciones
En una cacerola mediana, coloca las tunas, el agua y el azúcar y calienta a fuego medio-bajo. Con un machacador, presiona las tunas hasta que la fruta se ablande y se troce en pedazos más pequeños. Al primer hervor, retira del fuego, coloca aun lado y deja que se enfríe completamente.
En una jarra grande, combina las frambuesas, agua mineral, jugo de naranja y el vino. Revuelve y agrega la mezcla de la tuna. Si prefieres omitir las semillas, vierte la mezcla por un colador.
Revuelva para mezclar, servir con hielo y adornar con ramitas de menta.
