At the age of 7, when I moved to the United States from Mexico, I only knew two words in English: “The End.” Thanks to Tom and Jerry cartoons, I learned that when Jerry prevailed and those two words fancifully appeared across the TV screen, it meant “fin”, the end of my cartoon. Little did I know that the first two words I knew in English meaning “The End,” marked what was really the beginning.
I learned English in under a year. My third grade year. I was tutored during my lunch hour, giving up playtime with my new friends. Instead of monkey bars and kick ball, I sat in a classroom dictating colors, letters, numbers and shapes off English flash cards.
I had a pretty normal upbringing with a typical Texas small town life and fun high school years. I traveled to Mexico every summer and helped my grandmother run her convenience store. I spent my summers cooking and sharing unforgettable moments with her.
I’ve always been passionate about cooking but I never thought I could make anything out of it, except a happy husband. I tucked away my grandmother’s and my mother’s recipes deep in my memory and would revisit them once in a while when I cooked for myself.
As soon as I married and my son was born, the subject of nutrition was a main focus in our household. It was as if a light switch was flipped. I read labels, educated myself on nutrition and put what I learned into practice through family recipes and recipes I had developed.
As a personal project to organize my recipes, and to preserve those taught by my mother and grandmother, I began this blog in 2010. Never in a million years with the thought of it leading me to be selected as an Influential Latina in social media. Never. Me? The Mexican girl that barely spoke two words of English? I was humbled and felt so blessed for this once in a lifetime opportunity.
My month of May was like no other. A whirlwind. I was invited to Washington D.C and attend a policy briefing at the White House as part of a group of seventy influential voices in the blogging world. The event was created by LATISM (Latinos in Social Media) and Latina Bloggers Connect as a way to learn and share White House initiatives with our audience.

We met and heard from Julie Chávez Rodríguez, Associate Director of Latino Affairs and Immigration; Alejandra Ceja, Chief of Staff, Office of the Under Secretary, Department of Education; Lisa Pino, Deputy Administrator, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Department of Agriculture; and Marissa Duswalt, Associate Director for Policy and Events, Let’s Move Initiative.
As a mother and food blogger, the statistics relating to childhood hunger and obesity were astonishing. In part 2 of this series, I will focus on the food assistance and nutrition education programs mentioned at the briefing and do my part of helping spread the word.

Otra vez… en español!
A la edad de 7 años, cuando me mudé a los Estados Unidos desde México, yo sólo sabía dos palabras en Inglés: “. The End” Gracias a los dibujos animados de Tom y Jerry, me enteré de que cuando Jerry ganaba la batalla contra Tom y esas dos palabras aparecían en pantalla del televisor, se significaba el “fin”, el final de mi caricatura. Yo no sabía que las dos primeras palabras que aprendí en Inglés que significa “El Fin”, marcó lo que fue realmente el comienzo.
Yo aprendí Inglés en menos de un año. En tercero de primaria. Recibía ayuda y clases especiales de ingles durante mi hora de almuerzo, en ves de jugar con mis nuevos amigos, pasaba el tiempo en un salón de clases, aprendiendo y dictando colores, letras, números y formas en ingles.
Tuve una infancia normal con una vida típica en una ciudad pequeña en Texas con años de mucha diversión en la secundaria. Viajaba a México cada verano, y ayudaba a mi abuela en su miscelánea. Me pasaba los veranos cocinando y compartiendo momentos inolvidables con ella.
Siempre me ha gustado mucho la cocina, pero nunca pensé que podría hacer algo que valiera la pena en concinar, excepto mantener a mi marido feliz. Guarde las recetas de mi abuela y mi mama en mi mente y las preparaba de vez en cuando quería cocinar par mi.
Tan pronto cuando me casé y nació mi hijo, el tema de la nutrición era un objetivo principal en nuestro hogar. Era como si un foco se hubiera encendido. Empecé a leer etiquetas, y aprendí sobre la nutrición. Y hasta la fecha trato de poner en práctica lo que he aprendido a través de recetas de la familia y las recetas que desarrollo.
Como un proyecto personal para organizar mis recetas, y para preservar las recetas de mi mama y mi abuela, empecé este blog en 2010. Nunca en mi vida tuve la idea de que me seria seleccionada como una Latina influyente en los medios sociales. Nunca. Yo? La chica mexicana que apenas hablaba dos palabras de Inglés? Con mucha humildad acepte esta bendición.
Mi mes de mayo fue como ningún otro. Un torbellino. Fui invitada a Washington DC y asistir a una sesión informativa de política en la Casa Blanca como parte de un grupo de setenta voces influyentes en el mundo de los blogs. El evento fue creado por LATISM (Latinos in Social Media) y Latina Bloggers Connect como una forma de aprender y compartir las iniciativas de la Casa Blanca con nuestro público.
Nos reunimos y conocimos a Julie Chávez Rodríguez, Directora Asociada de Asuntos Latinos e Inmigración; Alejandra Ceja, Jefe de Personal, Oficina del Secretario del Departamento de Educación, Lisa Pino, Administradora Adjunto, Programa de Asistencia Suplementaria del Departamento de Agricultura, y Marissa Duswalt, directora Asociada de Política y Eventos de la iniciativa Let’s Move.
Como bloguera de comida y madre, las estadísticas relacionadas con el hambre y la obesidad infantil fueron sorprendentes. En la parte 2 de esta serie, se centrará en la ayuda alimentaria y programas de educación nutricional mencionados en la conferencia y pondré mi granito de para ayudar a difundir la el mensaje.
Me gustaría darle las gracias a LATISM y Latina Bloggers Connect por esta oportunidad maravillosa de aprendizaje. Fue un sueño hecho realidad para poder finalmente conocer a muchas de las chicas maravillosas que he conocido sólo a través de mi monitor de la computadora.
